Curriculum and Instruction for Patterson Unified School District is designed to provide students with a rigorous and meaningful educational experience. Students are provided with foundational skills in core content areas emphasizing critical thinking and oral and written expression. Technology is infused in students’ classroom experiences to enhance learning and prepare students for the twenty first century workplace. A goal of the district is to ensure excellence in education and cultivate healthy, contributing citizens!

Through staff development opportunities, the district encourages teachers to use a wide variety of instructional strategies and methods of assessment, thus providing students with multiple opportunities to learn and demonstrate understanding and mastery of the material. Teachers are supported and encouraged to infuse technology into instruction, so that students learn and practice skills that will serve them in the future.

Content Standards

Patterson Joint Unified’s implements a standards-based curriculum, in accordance with the California State Content Standards in mathematics, language arts, social studies, science and visual and performing arts. Assessment is a District-wide priority and it provides staff information essential to plan and pace instruction and modify lesson delivery, when appropriate. Assessment provides useful feedback to students and parents. Students receive a variety of assessments throughout the year including STAR and local benchmark assessments in math, reading and writing. Gifted and Talented Education

Students are identified as GATE through a formal assessment process available to qualifying students beginning in 3rd grade. GATE students are served within the classroom through differentiated instruction in daily rotation programs at the elementary level, and through a GATE elective, honors and Advanced Placement courses at the secondary level. English Language Learners (ELL)

Patterson Joint Unified is committed to providing services to students for which English is a second language These include English Language Development (ELD) and Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) so that students can learn English rapidly and access concepts and skills in their core academic classes. In addition, the District offers Dual Language Instruction Programs at Walnut Grove and Grayson Charter Schools, and offers some dual language courses at Creekside Middle School. The District Technology Plan for 2010-2013 was approved in December, 2010. The plan describes the district’s plan of instruction where technology is used to support student mastery of State content standards and technology literacy proficiencies, professional development for staff to implement this program, uses of technology for communication between the school and home/community, and the district’s equipment, infrastructure, software and technical support needs for the next three years. Advanced Placement and Honors Courses

The District offers a range of Pre-Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement courses for students. Our instructors receive ongoing training through College Board approved AP courses and institutes. Patterson’s Advanced Placement program offers students the opportunity to take college level courses and potentially receive college credit based on the Advanced Placement (AP) exam score. The decision to grant college credit is the determination of the specific college or university. Historically, a score of 3 or better qualifies a student for such consideration. Therefore, success on the AP exam is considered to be one measure of college readiness of our students.
